Child Care for Single Parents

Parenting is no easy job, but when you are a single parent, responsibilities you have to undertak and the challenges you have to face more than double. Single parenting comes with extra and unique challenges. For starters, you have all the responsibilities that are usually shared between two people. Choosing an appropriate, safe and trustworthy child care is one of these responsibilities.

Single parting is tough. Being the sole provider for a family means working long hours. This does not leave adequate time for child care and so single parents must seek outside help, such as a child care provider that is flexible and offers a safe and nurturing environment for the child. On the plus side, there is a wide range of options for single parents -- everything from one-on-one child care to day care centers and every thing in between.

Many single parents prefer the specialized care of a nanny or au pair. This, of course, works out well for single parents because they don't need to drop off their kids and pick them up at the child care facility. Having an additional care giver is also beneficial for the child as it provides them with a higher level of stability.

However, in-home care is not without its drawbacks. Single parents are basically entrusting their children to a relative stranger. This requires a great amount of trust that a lot of people may not have, especially when it concerns their  children. One-on-one care can also be very expensive. However, if a single parent can afford this kind of child care and can find a person they can be absolutely trusted, it can be the child care best option.

Day care centers can be a mixed blessing. For single parents, relying on a group rather than one person can provide a greater level of support. In the event that one care giver becomes ill, there are others care givers to take their place. Being in a day care also gives children the opportunity to socialize with other kids and other adults; this arrangement can be like a second family to a child. However, there is the possibility of instability in the child’s life if there is a high turn over in the day care. There is also a higher probability of illness due to the exposure to a larger number of kids.

There is also an additional option: an in-home child care provider. This option falls in between hiring a nanny and taking the child to a day care center. Typically, in-home care services are offered by stay-at-home mothers who run daycare-type programs from their homes. This is beneficial for single parents because they are more affordable than nannies, but offer the same closeness that would not be possible at a day care center.

Parenting is a parent’s most important job in life. For single parents, having third party quality care for children is not an option as one person cannot be in two places at once; thus, having a safe and loving care place for a child when the parent is not around is priceless.
