How to Bond With Your Teen

When we think of teenagers, we think of stubborn people who never listen to advice and do the opposite of what we say. We try to communicate with them, but they seem to live in a different world. It is a different time then when we were teenagers ourselves. You may have these communication problems with your teenage child. Teens are not fully mature adults and yet they are not children either; they are stuck in a place in between, and thus, care and consideration must be taken when trying to communicate with your teen.

Parents are a teen’s natural role models. Teens, like any child, really want attention from their parents although they might go through some trouble to hide it. There is a generational gap between teens and parents and so it makes sense that there would be some communication problems. Teens may have trouble expressing themselves so it is important to pay attention and listen carefully. Issues that teens bring up during conversations may seem like nonsense. If you do not understand something that your teenager is saying, don’t criticize him or her. Remember that you are the adult and it is your responsibility to keep the lines of communication open. Listen for clues and pay attention to your teenage child's body language.

To understand your teenager, put yourself in your child's shoes. Just like how you have a lot of issues to deal with, so does your teenager. Remember that this may be the first time your teen is experiencing this. Teens have to deal with school and relationships. Teens want their parents to know and understand how life is hard for them. They do not want to be criticized or asked too much when they get home. However, this doesn’t mean that you should not ask your teenager any questions at all. Ask open ended questions with a warm smile. Avoid "yes" or "no" questions as they are conversation killers.

Everyone likes to be financially independent, and teens are no exception. A part time job can be a character builder and can help teens on their path of self-discovery. Teens can gain a lot of life experience through work. Although you shouldn’t ask your teenager too many questions about money, keep an eye on how and where your teen spends his or her money.

Teens are children on their way to being adults. You should treat your teen with respect and make sure to let your teen know that his or her opinion counts. For instance, if you're going to do some renovating work on the house, ask for your teenager's opinions and thoughts, and give them as much consideration as your own. Treat your teenager with respect and value what they have to say. Doing so can help you form a closer bond with your teenager.
