Teen Stress
Teenagers are exposed to daily stress just like adults. Many of them do not know how to deal with stress, especially when they encounter a situation that are deemed as difficult, painful or helpless. It will be very beneficial for teenagers to learning how to cope with stress. There are many reasons for teens to be stressed about. Some of these sources are: poor self esteem, demands of schoolwork, peer pressures, separation of parents, changing schools, financial problems in family, physical changes, relationship problems, bad neighbrhood, sickness or being too demanding on oneself.
Teen stress should not be taken lightly. As a matter of fact, this period of their lives are most tender and vulnerable. Much attention and care should be given to make sure that your teenager learns to balance and cope with this phase of his or her life.
When teen stress is left unaddressed, it can lead to abuse, drug use, alcohol, aggression, teen pregnancy, withdrawals and anxiety. If a teenager is overly stress or showing signs of depression, you should get a consultation with a psychiatrist for help. Parents' communications with the teen is also very important. Look internally within your family and see if your teen's stress stems from a family issue. It is also worthwhile to learn to communicate with your teenager effectively.
Take note if stress is affecting your teen's behavior, health and feelings. Sometimes, parents are too busy with their lives that they do not pick up these cues from their child. Learn to listen to them and watch what they are doing. Try to impart stress management skills to them slowly.
Contrary to popular belief, teenagers actually need their parents' attention. This is the phase where they are trying to carve an identity of their own. Give them a supportive environment, a listening ear and a balanced lifestyle.
